NEWS FROM UP NORTH: Around 50 campaigners have moved over the weekend to occupy land that would otherwise be destroyed by the proposed £180 million second runway at Manchester Airport.

This is the first UK direct action campaign against the rapidly expanding aviation sector, and as such, marks a new departure from halting road construction and blocking surface traffic.

The proposal was given planning permission by Environment Secretary John Gummer just two weeks ago following a lengthy public inquiry. Clearance work was expected to begin in the spring marking the beginning of a three year construction phase, but these latest developments means those plans are on hold.

Details of exact location and contact info will be posted when it is know, but for the moment please start networking that this is likely to be where the biggest action of the summer will be. Any amount of support will undoubtedly be welcome.

PS - The Labour leadership used last weekend's SERA conference in London to reiterate their boundless support for the expansion of the aviation sector and especially Heathrow Terminal Five and Manchester Runway Two. The "UK's first green government" they say. Complete bollocks!
