Swallow's Wood newsletter - 13 June 2007
Please read on for some information about two important upcoming events.
(1) New Mills One World Festival - Saturday 23rd June 2007
(2) Start of the Public Inquiry, Tuesday 26th June 2007
(1) New Mills One World Festival - Saturday 23rd June 2007
We will be having a stall at the One World Festival which takes place between 12-6 p.m., in High Lea Park, St Mary's Road, New Mills on Saturday 23rd June.
This festival is an important event in the local and regional green calendar and it would be great to see as many of you there as possible on the day. If you come along, please feel free to introduce yourselves to us, particularly if you wish to become more active in the campaign. If you can help on the day, please call Emma on 01457 765672 -- no experience necessary!
(2) Start of the Public Inquiry (PI), Tuesday 26th June 2007
We need as many people as possible to take part in the PI, which starts on Tuesday June 26th at Stalybridge Civic Hall. Your help and active support with this would be greatly appreciated. Many of you will have received a letter from the Highways Agency and Persona Associates asking you whether you wish to speak. Read on to find out what do about this.
If you are willing to speak to at the Inquiry, no expertise is required; just a personal view explaining in a few words (or more, if you wish!) where you live, and why you don't support the bypass, why you support alternatives, etc. Personal views against the bypass will play an essential part in countering the "pro" views that will be put forward by "Siege" supporters. They also give you the opportunity to make the Public Inquiry public. Having your say is a vital part of this process.
If you would like to speak, either as a witness for our campaign or as an individual (representing yourself, so to speak) please call 0845 226 3392 for a chat about the process or send an e-mail to info@saveswallowswood.org.uk. We will add you our list of witnesses and pass this to the Inquiry organisers. As an individual member of the public you are not required to submit any written evidence unless you wish to do so.
A timetable for the Inquiry will be published once it is clear who would like to speak and when. The Programme Officer will then draw up the timetable for the Inquiry and will arrange with you when you should appear. The organisers will do their best to make sure this is at a time convenient for you. Some evening sittings can be arranged if there is demand for them, so if you are unable to attend during the day, please let us know.
Alternatively, you may just turn up at the start of the Inquiry and express a wish to a speak at a later stage. All direct requests from members of the public are usually permitted (though this is at the Inspector's discretion).
If you do not with to (or are unable to) appear and speak at the public inquiry, you need do nothing; just ignore the Highways Agency's letter. Because you are on our supporter list (i.e., you receive e-mails/hard copy mailings from us, or you have recently filled out our online form and asked us to send them in future), Save Swallow's Wood will be attending the Inquiry and will speak on your behalf. We will be attaching a list of the names of all our supporters (no addresses).
If you have any unanswered questions, please call us on 0845 226 3392 and we'll do our best to help. Whether or not you are speaking, please try to be there on the day the Inquiry starts. Siege will be there in force, and we need to make our presence felt too.
Best wishes,
Emma & Pat
