new roads planned - A167 / A69 / Crook Bypass / Pegswood Bypass

A167 Chilton Bypass

Length: 2.3 kilometres single carriageway
Estimated Cost: £9.1 million (at 2004 prices)
Planned start of work: July 2004/October 2005
Contractors: Balfour Beatty
Regional Authority: Durham County Council
Status: Construction imminent

A69 Haydon Bridge Bypass

Length: single carriageway
Estimated Cost: £18 million
Regional Authority: Northumberland County Council
Status: Public consultation took place during March 2003. Route now chosen
Expected Delivery Date: 2008/09

Haydon Bridge is situated approximately midway between Newcastle and Carlisle, 5 miles west of Hexham on the A69. There are protected species at risk, which inhabit Gees Wood and the South Tyne River.

Crook Bypass

Length: 1 km of single carriageway
Estimated Cost: £2.2million
Contractors: Balfour Beatty
Regional Authority: Durham County Council
Status: Work Started 1 December 2003 with a view to completion around August 2004.

Pegswood Bypass

Length: 2.7 kilometre single carriageway
Estimated Cost: £8.14 million
Expected Delivery Date: Spring 2006
Local Press: Morpeth today
Regional Authority: Northumberland County Council
Status: Provisionally Approved March 2004

The Pegswood Bypass has been accepted by Central Government for funding as a major scheme in the total amount of £8.14 m. Central Government has indicated that 50% of the costs will be met through Transport Supplement Grant with the remainder funded by supported capital borrowing by the County Council. The programme submitted with the major scheme bid anticipates that construction of the bypass will take place in the period April 2005 to March 2007. The programme includes an allowance of 11 months for a Public Inquiry if needed.
