PIRELLI RALLY, Watergate Forest Park
report on 26 April 2002 demo - Lobley Hill, Gateshead
After tireless campaigning to get the Pirelli Motor Rally stopped in order to protect the wildlife of Watergate Forest Park, Lobley Hill, local people took to the streets and held a demonstration on Friday 26th April as the rally began. A giant blackbird joined the protest to highlight the plight of the wildlife- swans and ducks nesting on the Park lake. The atmosphere of the demonstration was very friendly and peaceful. Tyne Tees TV interviewed local residents and the campaign received great press coverage in the Journal, stealing the show from Pirelli. Maybe they won't be back next year? We sincerely hope they won't!
