Annaholty-Shower bog under threat from N7 (Ireland)

Just to let you know that the proposed new N7 Nenagh Limerick motorway will be cutting straight through the heart of the Annaholty-Shower raised bog, home of endangered butterfly species on Annex II of European directive. Irish Peatland Conservation Council not consulted about this, nor for that matter anybody else. Submissions against the road have to be in at the latest at the end of the month, to -

National Roads Authority
Mid West National Road Design Office
Limerick County Council
Mungret College

UPDATE - 17th July 2001

A final decision on the exact route is expected early next month. Originally all submissions had to be in by the 16th July and the National Roads Authority (NRA) were then going to make their decision, supposedly based on our submissions, in early August. We have now up to July 27th for submissions, because there has been such a huge response, but there is no change as yet on decision day.... which means that the NRA has just 4 or 5 days instead of 2wks to make its decision.

I feel EU law on habitat protection and the Ramsar Convention Wetlands should be enough to stop them, but there's a third option around the fringes of the bog which will be more difficult to argue against.
