TENT VILLAGE SAVES WEARDALE GREEN
A public inquiry has been gained by residents of Howden-le-Wear seeking to save their village green. Farmer Freddy Wilson tried to build a fence round the green, claiming ownership, but the residents of the 13 cottages surrounding the green stopped him by setting up a tent village on the green, where they lived for several weeks. Now they must prove to the inquiry that it has been used for 'lawful sports and pastimes' for more than 20 years, and so have it registered as public land by the Commons Registration Act.
A villager said: "We are fighting this for the children of the future. This land has been used by children and the village for the 40 years we have been here and long before. It is the safest place for them to play and we want the right to use it."
