EDINBURGH GREEN BELT THREATENED BY DUAL CARRAIGEWAY

Protest Camp Setting up NOW!

BODIES NEEDED!!

The proposed 'upgrading' of the A701 is in fact an entirely new road which will destroy miles of green belt to the south of Edinburgh. The plan is opposed by many communities including locals fighting under the name NAAG (No Alignment Action Group). Others opposing it include FoE Scotland, TRANSform Scotland, SPOKES, the Cyclists Touring Club, The City of Edinburgh Council and many others. Despite this, Midlothian Council approved the £20 million scheme in September ('99).

The 2.5 mile dual carraigeway will have several massive roundabouts, some with flyovers, and will cut through small communities changing their way of life forever. It will also destroy an SSSI as well as the fragile habitats of protected species and local wildlife. It breaks dozens of local and national policies on roadbuilding, green belt use, environment, transport policy, out of town developments and wildlife protection.

We are asking people to lobby both Donald Dewar and members of the Transport and the Environment Committee to put a halt to this destructive road which heralds the arrival of a huge development corridor shifting the balance from sustainable transport to the use of the private car.

NAAG meetings are held on most Wednesdays at 7.30pm in the backroom at the Countryside Inn near Bilston (just south of Edinburgh). Contact: Joan (see above) if you'd like to attend or offer any other form of support. Your help and ideas would be greatly appreciated.
