climbers urgently needed at Glen Of The Downs
13 people have been imprisoned in Dublin prisons in connection with the Glen Of The Downs campaign. While most have been released, 5 remain in prison, as Prisoners of Conscience. Here is a report from one of the women who was released from prison just days ago - the basic message is -
THE CAMPAIGN IS NOT OVER YET!!!
ALTHOUGH MANY OF THE TREES ARE CUT, THE TARMAC IS NOT YET LAID!
CLIMBERS ARE NEEDED URGENTLY
THERE IS A ROAD-CONSTRUCTION TO OPPOSE!!!
The Glen Of The Downs vigil has been maintained for 3 years. What's at stake is as follows -
Five environmental campaigners are currently incarcerated in Clover hill and Mountjoy prisons, Dublin. They are held without charge or trial, although their charge sheets claim that they are in contempt of court. They are in fact held because of a refusal to undertake an oath by which they will be unable to return to the Glen Of The Downs nature reserve indefinitely. This is a violation of human rights.
In the Glen Of The Downs presently, the vigil is being maintained. However, DUCHAS (the heritage service who own the lands on which the main camp was, as opposed to Wicklow Couty Council, who own the cut zones) have stated that the tree houses which occupy the glen are to be removed. As many of the environmental protestors are now injuncted from the site or in prison (13 were originally incarcerated), at least five climbers are needed to maintain the tree houses and inject fresh energy into the campaign. Please, this call is urgent. Human rights are being violated and a national nature reserve (proposed SAC site) is under threat of destruction.
